Living Abroad

Posted on: 04 April 2017 BY: MLiu

As an international student with professional work experience before coming to the United States, living here is remarkable. The experiences that I have gained here as a Social Ambassador as well as a member of Diversity and Inclusion Committee enrich my cultural knowledge specially in dealing with younger folks. Most of the students that I worked with are half of my age. They have a lot of energy, and are ambitious. Therefore, I have to be able to see things from their perspective to be able to work with them.

Professor Patricia Delaney and professor Moise St. Louis are my role models here in Saint Michael’s college. They are highly educated and are loved by the students. Professor Delaney helped me to adjust to Vermont’s rough winter when I first came here. She also prepared me to integrate with Saint Michael’s community. Her best advice to me was always see things from two different perspective before making a decision and always stay warm.

On the other hand, Professor Moise St Louis helped me with my leadership role here in Saint Michael’s campus. He said that I am a persistent strong woman, that I have determination and will find a way out of nowhere and make something happen and see the possibility to do it and won’t take no for an answer. Therefore, he advised me to pay more attention to the patterns of communication. He said that as an individual whose first language is not English I should slow down and pay attention more closely instead of rushing through.

Without both professors, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today. They helped me to see the different sides of other people that I was not able to see before and it helped me to be a better human being.

Living abroad has helped me grow in a numerous amount of ways. I was able to meet and work with people from a variety of backgrounds and got to learn their stories. Each individual that I personally met has taught me a of their life experiences, of all my professional skills, dealing with different groups has taught me a lot and it will definitely be very useful for my future career.
