Diplomacy in the Windy City

Posted on: 15 July 2023 BY: ECorte

Hey everyone! It's been a while since my last blog post, but I'm back with an exciting update. Let me take you on a journey to the American Model United Nations 2022 Conference in the vibrant city of Chicago, IL!

I owe my participation in this prestigious conference to the incredible organization I'm a part of on campus, Mizzou Model United Nations (MIZMUN). MIZMUN is a space for individuals passionate about International Relations and Diplomacy, providing them with a platform to engage in UN-style simulations throughout the semester. But that's not all – our organization also competes in national tournaments like the renowned American Model United Nations (AMUN).

Preparations for this conference began months in advance, and as part of a robust delegation consisting of 18 talented students, we underwent rigorous training in debating techniques and resolution writing. Our goal was to be thoroughly equipped and ready to make our mark on the international stage. In the days leading up to the conference, a mix of excitement and nervousness filled the air. However, the support of my team reassured me that we were more than ready to unleash our full potential.

As soon as we arrived in Chicago, I was captivated by the city's charm. While the conference demanded our attention for eight long hours each day, we were fortunate to have some free time to explore the wonders of the Windy City. One of the highlights was visiting the iconic Millennium Park, a picturesque oasis in the heart of the bustling metropolis.

The climax of the conference arrived on its final day when we were given the task of voting for the best overall delegation in each committee. To my pleasant surprise, Mizzou's delegation emerged victorious in three out of the five committees! It was an incredible achievement that serve as a piece of evidence of the dedication and collective efforts of every member. We had poured our hearts and souls into this conference, and our hard work paid off in the form of these well-deserved awards.

Reflecting on my experience at AMUN 2023 in Chicago, I can confidently say that it was nothing short of extraordinary. Engaging in discussions on complex global issues and navigating the intricacies of diplomacy demanded a significant amount of energy and time. Nevertheless, the reward was immeasurable. I acquired new knowledge, honed my skills, and above all, brought home a tangible symbol of our success – an award that serves as a reminder of the unforgettable memories we created together.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my AMUN adventure. Stay tuned for more exciting blog posts in the future. Until then, see you soon!
